| A Family Saga | | Swedish title: Lappskatteland |
In 1861 Njenna, a young Sami woman, lives with her family, following the reindeers through the seasons of the year, as they have always done. But times are changing - new houses are being built by Swedish settlers and there are conflicts over the pasture-lands.
But Njenna has other thoughts on her mind. She only has eyes for Aanta Naahkese, the handsome young man with magical talents. She makes him a gift of shoelaces she has woven herself. Now his steps will always lead him back to her.
Their love-story has almost only started, when Njenna is brutally raped and all at once her life changes completely.
Almost 150 years later a young woman finds a pair of Sami shoelaces, tucked away in the attic of her mother's house. They serve her as an Ariadne-thread, taking her back on a journey to the past, through her family-history. What she discovers is a story of love, passion and jealousy, of shame and sorrow, but also of a proud cultural heritage and the history of a people, which was almost lost. She finds four generations of women with close ties, who share a history of denial of their roots, making it impossible for them to reach out to one another and to forgive.
Reviews: ”An interesting debut, consistent and convincing. Annica Wennström has the courage – possibly contrary to Sami tradition – to in a novel depict sensory impressions which, I imagine, inspire the chant of the Sami.” (Svenska Dagbladet)
”The novel is about conquering oblivion, to recreate the contours of a disowned past.” (Kuriren)
”This is an ambitious first book. Annica Wennström has high aspirations – both concerning her language and her story, which is beautiful as well as important.” (Helsingborgs Dagblad)
”A debut with strong feelings, vigorous language and an interesting subject. It gets better and better the more you read.” (LO-tidningen)
”A story which is very much alive and deserves many readers.” (Sundsvalls Tidning)
”The anxiously beating heart of the story revolves around what it means to be an outsider, how it starts with oppression and how the identity is formed through adjustment. One doesn’t have to feel rootless to experience recognition. At her best Annica Wennström writes carefully, almost transparently.” (Arbetarbladet)
