-Adventures in the Arctic and Antarctic

"But who´s looking after your children?"

It all began with a note on a notice board. This was the start of a journey and an adventure at the South Pole in the Antarctic, through the Arctic and on through Northern Norway. But this was not only an adventure full of joy and excitement, because back at home another drama was unfolding, involving the author’s husband and children. The art of combining the two became an adventure in itself!

“When I’m working I am asked many questions about the effects of climate change, the eradication of animal species and other important topics linked to the polar regions. But by far the most frequently asked question, which I will touch upon in various ways, must be of international interest, since the same question is posed by people from different countries. And it doesn’t matter where I am. I can be in the Arctic, the Antarctic, or just giving a lecture at home. The question always pops up. And perhaps the most remarkable thing of all is that it is usually women who ask:
“But who’s looking after your children?”

Like the title, the adventure in this book is divided into two parts – it deals with the opposing poles Cecilia Hed Malmström has encountered both internally and externally in her life as a polar guide and a mother.

The book has led to a documentary film about Cecilia and her life which will be shown on Swedish and Norwegian television during 2009 (SVT and NRK).
