The fascinating story of an unusual woman – the dramas of her private life closely intertwined with the dramas and horrors of 20th century European history – and that of a “modern”, late 20th century young woman, who takes on the task of piecing this life story together, while at the same time coming to terms with her own past.
In 1884 a baby girl, Lili, is born to wealthy parents in Alsace. She grows up under idyllic circumstances, but when the beloved father suddenly dies and World War I breaks out, the family’s life goes to pieces. Lili marries Ernst, a friend of her father’s, and moves with him to Vienna, full of dreams of a new life. But the marriage is not what she had hoped and longed for, and after a great tragedy Lili leaves Ernst. In the 1980’s the Swedish journalist Amanda returns to Vienna, where she once lived as a young student and was married to Jacob. The reason for her trip is that she unexpectedly has inherited a ring from Lili – a ring, with a history that can be traced back to both the Russian revolution and the Nazi camps. Through Amanda’s investigations the reader becomes involved in the adventurous life of a very unusual woman. Lili has known both love and tragedy, need and riches and war and peace. Leaving behind a disintegrating Europe, marked by the conflicts during the time between the wars, she heads for America, where newcomers are welcome and the American dream of success and wealth seems like a promise. While reconstructing the story of Lili’s life, Amanda keeps confronting her own painful past and examining the choices and decisions she herself has made. Finally she finds that re-living Lili’s life has brought her a peace of mind.
